Positive: Characterized by or displaying affirmation or acceptance or certainty.
Attitude: A complex mental state involving beliefs and feelings and values and dispositions to act in certain ways.
A positive attitude is a complex mental state displaying certainty. The question is; can we develop certainty if our beliefs, feelings, and values are based on a world that’s changing constantly, a world that is not fundamentally under our control? That’s where we find ourselves – in existence – where everything changes. If things didn’t change, we could not experience them, because it is the changes that we notice. This is what time records, and this is our everyday experience.
If we are deluded and not aware that our life and everything around us changes constantly, then we might be able to develop some level of illusory certainty, security. However, if we understand from careful, irrefutable observation that the world we thought was so secure and substantial is no more than a million things in flux, then our certainty will without doubt become eroded.
What is it that we can be certain of, about which we can develop a positive attitude? Certainty must be, by definition, something that doesn’t change. When things change, they become uncertain. Therefore, the only thing about which we could truly develop a positive attitude is something that doesn’t change.
Since everything we are conscious of, everything within existence, changes, then what we are searching for, our certainty, must be not within existence. Only that which is outside of existence is unchanging – it was never born, never dies, and is eternal. This is what our hearts search for, this constancy, even if we don’t recognize this fact.
This Reality outside of existence is where we can have an authentic positive attitude. Anything else, anything within our experience or within existence, will be subject to dissolution and change, and our positive attitude will subsequently suffer.
So how do we get in touch with Reality, that which is constant, unchanging and beyond existence as we know it? How do we develop a real positive attitude? We do it by observing the false in order to become immersed in the truth. We observe every facet of life; our beliefs, our attitudes, our opinions. We no longer just believe, we now see for ourselves, and at the end of this inquiry will be the truth; our own truth, and not someone else’s, or words in a book written by others. Now we will know Realty for ourselves and be free.
It all begins with strengthening our minds so that we can become true warriors and discover an authentic positive attitude for ourselves.
